Description
La Pedriza is located on the Madrid side of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. It boasts a spectacular geomorphology set against a granitic landscape. Granites are plutonic igneous rocks, originating from magma that cooled slowly millions of years ago within the Earth's crust.
Along the trail, you can identify landforms such as boulder fields, domes, and ridges. You can also spot smaller geological features created by erosion, such as balancing rocks, the Cueva de la Mora (Moorish Cave), and the ridges in the Tiburón (Shark's Fin) rock formation. Erosion has also sculpted whimsical shapes in the rocks, some resembling animals like "the seal," "the turtle," "the piglet," and "the bird," or landmarks like "the elm." In the distance, you'll also glimpse prominent features such as the Cancho de los Muertos (Rock of the Dead), the El Yelmo dome, and the Las Torres ridges.
There is a variant of the route called the short path, which allows for a route more suitable for families with children, 1.6 km long.
