Buitrago del Lozoya
The water had already done its job when the pioneers arrived.
Buitrago de Lozoya, stones that resonate in water
Water had already carved its trail when human beings arrived at what today is known as Buitrago de Lozoya. Centuries passed, no one knows how many, until someone decided to build a fortress on a high promontory of the Lozoya river. As a strategic location, it passed through many hands: Muslim, Christian and Spanish... Thousands of years have left their mark! This location at the foot of Somosierra was once a Señorío or manor estate, then a Comunidad or community and finally, was elevated to the rank of a Villa, all within the last thousand years. Buitrago de Lozoya is one of the most iconic representations of Spain's feudal heritage. Between the 14th and the 19th centuries it brought together the people of this district to defend their feudal rights. But the 20th century also left its mark, not just in the buildings that are visible but also in the form of artistic memory: the Picasso collection in its small museum is perhaps its best symbol of recent times.
There are many ways to discover Buitrago de Lozoya; the only medieval town in the entire Region of Madrid whose 800-metre-long city walls are still standing. The best way to explore it is by following the cobbled streets within the walls of this fortification. Apart from its wall, Buitrago has several 14th-century buildings: the Torre del Reloj or clock tower, the church of Santa María del Castillo and the Mudejar-style castle of the Mendozas.

Tips for visiting Buitrago de Lozoya
It's always a good idea to plan ahead. The fortifications are divided into two zones. We have the lower walkway, that can be freely accessed from the medieval garden or from the Castle square. There you can see the Castle and the Coracha section of the walls. The other zone is on the south side —the high wall— which can be entered from the church of Santa María del Castillo during opening hours. It leads into the Torre del Reloj and to the exhibition of siege machines.
