Nuevo Baztán
Nuevo Baztán, a journey to modernity
Nuevo Baztán is not just like any other town. It is a legacy of history: the dream of a man ahead of his time, who thought it possible to build, in the middle of nowhere, an industrial complex where the most qualified foreign professionals could be found.
Nuevo Baztán is so much more than a town in the Autonomous Region of Madrid. It embodies the history of design: the joint project of two of the greatest visionaries of the Spanish 18th century who intended to place the country at the industrial forefront.
One of those visionaries, Juan de Goyeneche —a self-made statesman who invested his fortune to put Spain on the map of the industrialised world— convinced the other —the architect José Benito de Churriguera— to design a place where cloths were produced for the army, glass was blown as in Murano or fine paper and exquisite liquors were crafted.
Visiting the Palacio de Goyeneche and the Centre for Interpretation of Nuevo Baztán is a privilege for the enthusiasts of architecture and design. Even more so when such places can be found amidst a paradise where, on each side of the road, olive, oak, holm oak and almond trees sprout. A privilege topped when enjoyed in the company of one of the guides of the Tourism Office, located inside the Palacio Goyeneche.

Only by means of one or several walks through this small urban centre, is it possible to imagine how it was originally conceived and what were the reasons that drove Juan de Goyeneche to embark on such an adventure.
