Chinchón
Chinchón has the power to make time stand still.
Chinchón, a trip back in time
Chinchón is a place where time appears to have stopped in its tracks. And this is noticeable as soon as one arrives. All of its winding lanes lead to the Plaza Mayor, a charming Castilian town square dating back to the 15th century and considered one of the prettiest in the world today. To enter is to feel oneself a part of history.
Even before we arrive we can distinguish the silhouette of the Castillo de los Condes and at its base the town of Chinchón, over the horizon. Once there, several noteworthy buildings over the roofs of the Plaza Mayor capture the visitor’s gaze: the parish church and the clock tower. But there's so much more to visit and to discover with time in hand: its theatre, located in the former palace of the Counts of Chinchón, its Baroque shrines, the Casa de la Cadena, and above all, their interiors. In some of them, visitors might come across a work by one of the greatest masters in the history of art: Francisco de Goya.
Chinchón is also an ideal place for lunching out or dining. A paradise for lovers of mutton, suckling pig or kid, slow roasted on wood fires; or game and stews, pastries, olive oils, wine and anisette.
For an even-better visit, plan ahead to take advantage of the different festivals that are celebrated in different seasons. And let’s not forget the open doors event on the first week of each month -except in summer- when the town's landmark buildings throw open their doors to visitors.
But you can also get to know it fully in the company of an expert tour guide who’ll happily show you around.
