The Archaeological and Paleontological Museum of the Community of Madrid was inaugurated in 1999 with the aim of preserving, researching and disseminating the archaeological heritage of the Region. This museum, located in the old Dominican convent of the Madre de Dios, from the 17th and 18th centuries, in Alcalá de Henares, is in charge of guarding all the material from the archaeological excavations carried out in the Community of Madrid, its storage , restoration and, where appropriate, research and exhibition in its permanent exhibition rooms. From a didactic but rigorous approach, it offers a tour of the history of Madrid, from its origins, when the imprint of man was not yet present, to modernity, organized into units that cover prehistory, the Neolithic, the pre-Roman peoples, the Romanization, the Middle Ages and the establishment of the court in the capital.

At the same time, it is home to a varied and extensive cultural offer, starting with the mounting of temporary exhibitions of recognized quality, which are complemented by guided tours, conferences and seminars, children's workshops or musical events. The museum is also a promoter of important archaeological excavations: Llano de la Horca in Santorcaz where we delve into the carpetan substrate that the Romans found when they arrived in our Community and Pinilla del Valle in the Lozoya Valley, which has given rise to the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Neanderthals and which is one of the most important sets of sites in Europe in the Neanderthal world.
