A trip to 19th century Spain through the eyes of one of its great painters
Until October 4, 2026, the Museo Nacional del Prado presents the exhibition "Valeriano D. Bécquer (1834-1870): Los cuadros de costumbres," a unique opportunity to discover brought together for the first time the eight works that the artist created between 1866 and 1867 for the former Museo de la Trinidad.
The exhibit allows a close look at daily life, traditions, and popular festivities of Aragón, Soria, and Ávila through scenes full of authenticity and detail. Considered one of the best examples of Spanish costumbrista painting of the 19th century, this collection stands out for Bécquer's artistic quality and his sincere and realistic perspective on the people and customs of his time.
In addition to the paintings, the exhibition incorporates original documentation and testimonies written by the artist himself, which help to better understand the context and significance of works that are fundamental to the history of realism in Spain.
